Ali Hamed, a 25-year-old resident of Corona, has been charged with prostitution-related offenses after allegedly soliciting a minor. Hamed faces accusations of offering money to a 14-year-old girl for sexual acts, a crime which carries with it the weight of child endangerment and could lead to imprisonment, according to a release by the Queens District Attorney's Office.
The events unfolded on the morning of June 25, when the minor was accosted on her way to school—it's a narrative sadly too familiar, the shoals of our city's streets offering haven for predators who mistake children for currency, and negotiations for innocence as mere transactions. According to a press release from the Queens District Attorney's Office, Hamed approached the girl on 97th Street, communicating in both English and Spanish, attempting to coerce her into a sexual act for cash; the girl bravely rejected the offer and sought the safety of her father and the authorities.
The ordeal prompted an immediate response—photos and a description of the suspect disseminated by NYPD, subsequent surrender by the accused, and a broader inquiry possibly unveiling other victims. "As alleged, this defendant walked up to a 14-year-old girl who was on her way to school and told her he would give her cash if she performed a sex act," said District Attorney Melinda Katz, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and support for the Human Trafficking Bureau. She urges those with information to contact 718-286-6548, as reported by the Queens District Attorney's Office.
The follow-through on such charges demands a meticulous investigative effort, the work of Detective Jasmin Gutic under the oversight of NYPD supervisors Sergeant Thomas Lamneck and Lieutenant Brendan Grace, not forgetting Assistant District Attorney Kiran Cheema leading the prosecution with guidance from experienced superiors in their Human Trafficking Bureau these efforts culminating in an indictment that may end with Hamed facing one and a third to four years behind bars. Queens Supreme Court Justice Peter Vallone Jr. has set Hamed's next court date for September 10.
