Corpus Christi was the scene of a high-stakes robbery followed by a chase that would seem cinematic if not for its very real consequences. Local resident Jose Rodriguez, 23, has been handed a substantial sentence of nearly 8 years in prison for his involvement in a series of armed robberies targeting Vape City stores and subsequent evasion of law enforcement, as announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
The series of events unfolded on July 9, 2024, when Rodriguez, along with Alex Espinosa, stormed into a Vape City on Ayers Street, threatening employees and demanding cash; this dangerous spree continued with a similar robbery at another Vape City location in Calallen later that night, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The authorities quickly identified Rodriguez's vehicle, leading to a reckless high-speed chase through Corpus Christi's streets, where speeds exceeded 100 mph and the culprits' wanton disregard for public safety was laid bare – they even resorted to extinguishing their car's lights in a failed attempt to shake off the police.
Following a guilty plea on April 22, U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos sentenced Rodriguez to 12 months for aggravated robbery and further tacked on an additional 84 months for brandishing a firearm – a total of 96 months, or 8 years, to be served consecutively. Upon release, Rodriguez will also be subject to three years of supervised release, during what promises to be a strict post-incarceration oversight.
Calling attention to Rodriguez's reckless behavior, the court highlighted how the convicted "not only robbed store employees at gunpoint but also led officers on a reckless high-speed chase through residential neighborhoods," as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. During the sentencing hearing, this merciless act of lawlessness was not just an affront to the victims but to the peace of the community itself. Rodriguez's accomplice, Espinosa, wasn't left unchecked either, receiving a 36-month sentence followed by two years of supervised release for his part in the crime spree.
While Rodriguez awaits transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility, the harmonious efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alongside the Corpus Christi Police Department, with the prosecutorial diligence of Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Martin, have ensured a successful closure to this high-profile case.
