According to city information, the City of Detroit has recently approved a three-year contract to implement the HAAS Alert Safety Cloud® technology across its public safety fleet. This puts Detroit on the map as the largest city in the nation to fully adopt this system, marking a commitment to the welfare of both its emergency personnel and the community they serve. The unanimous backing by Detroit City Council in July came on the heels of a 10-month pilot program through which Detroit Fire Department (DFD) apparatus were equipped and tested with the Safety Cloud, resulting in over 100,000 alerts sent to drivers about nearby emergency vehicles.
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms emphasized the significance of this advancement. He told the city's official website, "Our emergency response times are now at historic lows — and with HAAS Alert, we now have another tool in our toolbox to help reduce collisions while we respond to calls for service." The technology works in real-time by sending alerts to drivers using platforms like Waze, Apple Maps, and certain Stellantis and Volkswagen vehicles, enhancing situational awareness and contributing to a decrease in preventable accidents. Detroit residents without compatible vehicles are being encouraged to use Waze or Apple Maps to receive these notifications.
Detroit Police Department (DPD) also shared their perspective on the innovation. Police Chief Todd Bettison explained the added layer of safety that HAAS Alert's Responder-to-Responder feature brings, ensuring better protection for officers while improving emergency response coordination. "HAAS Alert's Responder-to-Responder technology will help ensure our officers are better protected while driving and allow us to coordinate more efficiently during emergencies," Bettison stated on the City of Detroit’s website.
