The Department of Justice has increased efforts to combat violent crime in Louisiana by providing additional resources to Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. According to the FBI New Orleans Field Office, the support from the Violent Crime and Racketeering Section (VCRS) is aimed at dismantling organized crime groups linked to rising violence in the state.

At the center of this effort is Operation Summer Heat, a joint initiative led by the FBI with the participation of 11 local, state, and federal agencies, along with state and federal prosecutors. The operation targeted four gangs—the Vultures, Bleedas, 60 Gang, and BBG—implicated in crimes including murders, robberies, and drug trafficking.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Tapp noted that the DOJ provided additional trial attorneys to support federal prosecutions, stressing the importance of the VCRS in handling gang-related cases.

Operation Summer Heat resulted in more than 100 arrests, the seizure of over 100 firearms, firearm converters, fentanyl, other narcotics, and significant amounts of cash. The operation’s scope extended beyond Baton Rouge into other neighborhoods with high levels of gang activity and violent crime. Additional agents and intelligence personnel from the FBI’s Violent Crime Rapid Deployment Team have also joined the effort, with officials confirming that the campaign against violent crime will continue.
