An encounter between police and the driver of a reportedly stolen vehicle escalated rapidly yesterday morning, leaving the driver critically wounded from an officer's gunfire and part of a Publix parking lot in Ocoee, Florida, sectioned off for investigation. As reported by FOX 35 Orlando, Ocoee police were canvassing the area at around 11:30 a.m. after a stolen vehicle report when they found the vehicle in question.
The situation intensified as police approached and the unnamed driver charged an officer with the vehicle. In the confrontation, the officer fired, striking the driver. According to the same report, no officers sustained injuries during the incident, but the driver is currently in critical condition at Advent Hospital.
Witnesses at the Publix shopping plaza expressed their distress over the event. Cherrie Lindsey, who arrived post-incident, recounted her shock per WESH, stating, "It was a shock. We pulled in and you can see five police cars and the barricade up there and all that. We didn’t know what was going on." Another local, Jim Moyer, shared his lament over the growing unsettling nature in what is known as his home, finding solace in prayer.
Further updates on the incident and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's examination into the use of force are pending, and the community remains restive as they await the findings.
