A tragic incident unfolded on Highway 90 near Fondren Road in southwest Houston when a tanker truck burst into flames, leading to the fatality of the driver. The fire, reported on SH-90 by Fondren Road, prompted emergency responses as firefighters tackled the blaze fueled by 8,800 gallons of gasoline inside the tanker. According to FOX 26, despite their swift arrival and efforts, the truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident, occurring early in the morning, led to hours-long closure of the southbound lanes, as per Click2Houston. While the northbound lanes remain open, the southbound side of the highway has been expected to see prolonged disruptions. Train traffic, also affected by the fire, was briefly halted but has since resumed.
In the wake of the inferno, one firefighter was taken to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center suffering from heat exhaustion. "He is doing well," Fire officials told Click2Houston, sharing a rare piece of reassuring news in an otherwise somber situation. No other vehicles were caught up in the accident, and no additional injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is yet unknown.
