Residents of a multifamily housing complex in Duluth had a rude awakening Wednesday morning when a fire broke out in one of its units. According to an official report by the Duluth Fire Department, crews were called to the scene at 9:12 AM on the 1700 block of E. First Street. Firefighters from multiple stations, including Downtown, Woodland, UMD, Lakeside, and Duluth Heights, responded swiftly to the blaze, which produced heavy smoke inside a single room.
Thankfully, all tenants were evacuated safely, and no human injuries were reported. However, in a saddening turn of events, two cats found inside the affected unit perished due to smoke inhalation. Investigators are now piecing together the cause of the fire, and while doing their work, the smoke-filled room was the last thing on the resident's mind, who is now displaced.
The extent of the damage has been estimated at $100,000, as per the fire department's assessment, which includes both the room and its contents. The single resident faced by this disaster is currently without a home. The incident remains under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.
