The AC Transit Realign project is set to launch its restructured bus network on August 10, reshaping the way 104 bus lines operate across Alameda and Contra Costa counties. In an extensive public outreach process that spanned two years, AC Transit gathered rider feedback and community insight to draft this new plan, aiming to serve East Bay travelers better while addressing the shift to hybrid and remote work structures that emerged post-pandemic. According to a press release from AC Transit, the agency is committed to maintaining safe and reliable transit as they navigate a significant budget shortfall of $41.5 million.
Stabilizing at 85% of pre-pandemic levels, ridership's recovery has been an encouraging sign for the transit authority, which hopes to restore full service shortly. Yet, the financial crunch has necessitated a trimming down from 130 to 123 operational bus lines, 15 of which are brand new routes added to serve local and supplementary needs, with some strategically placed to facilitate more effective transfers at key locations despite the discontinuation of various lines that evidenced low ridership or outdated routing, explained in greater detail on the AC Transit website.
City-by-city breakdowns reveal how individual communities will experience the Realign changes; in Oakland, Alameda, and surrounding areas, locals can watch out for new lines like 9, 22, and 31 and adjust to other established routes. At the same time, residents of Fremont, Hayward, and their neighboring cities can expect new lines, including 9, 211, 231, and 281, to start running on August 10. Some routes will remain status quo, notably lines 1T, 93, and 800, among others that still meet riders' needs effectively and efficiently; these lines will operate as per usual without alterations.
Moreover, AC Transit warns that not all bus stops will brandish updated signage by August 10. A detail also confirmed in a social media post from AC Transit's official account, so passengers are encouraged to exercise patience and stay informed by using the AC Transit Official App or other popular third-party apps to receive service alerts that will guide them through the Realign transition, allowing travelers to stay informed wherever they travel especially since the transition could include routing and schedule changes, or a partial or complete substitution with a different bus line.
Realign Service Changes start August 10. Changes can include routing, schedule, and/or a full or partial replacement with a different line.
