In a move sparked by concerns for public safety and environmental health, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with county planners and the United States Air Force Academy to clear illegal homeless camps near the USAFA grounds. According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, the action came after the detection of unauthorized settlements that were encroaching on USAFA property.
The camps were initially spotted during a routine patrol in July, with the Sheriff’s Office reporting significant environmental damage caused by prolonged occupancy. Offering a measure of empathy amidst enforcement, on July 31, three individuals found trespassing were not only cited but also offered assistance for the homelessness they endured, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
During the cleanup, held on August 5, the combination of the Sheriff’s Posse and deputies created a secure perimeter, a process described as a testament to interagency collaboration focused on community and environmental protection. El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal summed up the concerted effort, stating, “Addressing illegal encampments and their impacts on public and federal lands requires a strong, united response. This operation is a clear example of what’s possible when agencies work together to protect our community, preserve our landscapes, and offer support to those in need,” as obtained by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
Continued surveillance of the previously affected region will be carried out by both the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and USAFA Security Forces. Their vigilance assures that these lands, once marred by makeshift living spaces, will stay in compliance with legal occupancy standards, guarding against future illicit camps. This cleanup reflects the balancing act between maintaining order and offering support, as per the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
