El Paso ISD's Dr. Sonia Aguilar, Assistant Director of External Funds, was recently graced with a Congressional Commendation, a nod to her inspiring career trajectory and unwavering dedication to education. According to El Paso ISD, Aguilar's commendation was presented by U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, celebrating a journey that led from a childhood in Durango, Mexico, to hitting the scholarly heights with a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration from UTEP.
Aguilar's past began in the maquiladora industry and wound its way to the U.S., where she managed to somehow balance the rigorous demands of family, work, and academia. Her educational pursuit saw her earn numerous degrees, with "Hard work pays off," Aguilar said, as obtained by El Paso ISD. She continued, "My goal has always been to prove that it’s possible to dream big, no matter where you start." Aguilar's achievements reflect a deep-seated belief in education as a transformational force.
Fifteen years within El Paso ISD's Budget Department offered Aguilar a platform to consistently influence educational outcomes and resources. She carries the title of lifelong learner, nourished by her international experiences in places such as Hong Kong, Munich, Shanghai, and Turin. In these vibrant economic environments, she witnessed the universal economic threads that bind and the profound impact of borderless education.
Moreover, Aguilar's doctoral dissertation explored deeply understanding the intrinsic value of life experiences that principals carry and how it shapes their impact in our education system, particularly in aiding the "more disadvantaged student population within this border region," Aguilar told El Paso ISD. Her Congressional recognition from Escobar is a reflection not simply of her accolades but of her role as a beacon for students and a valued member of the El Paso ISD community.
