In a bid to tackle persistent crime and traffic concerns along Hwy. 99, local law enforcement and city services in Eugene joined forces for a targeted operation. On July 29, the efforts zeroed in on the stretch from Barger to Roosevelt – an area troubled by unlawful activities and safety issues, worrying residents and entrepreneurs alike. According to a city release, the Eugene Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit (TSU) cracked down on traffic infractions, while Housing Support Officers (HSOs) confronted trespassing, illegal encampments, and open-container violations.

Challenges along the corridor caught the attention of the authorities due, in large measure, to the Bethel Community's outcry over mounting dangers and a spike in crime, alongside firsthand reports from city workers in the field; furthermore, the region has faced a spate of deadly incidents involving pedestrians and vehicles. The combined law enforcement teams effected close to an impressive 15 arrests covering a spectrum from minor trespass to outstanding warrants and they also issued numerous warnings besides citations, while Public Works staff dealt with litter and recovered pilfered merchandise carts.

The July 29 operation's high visibility was by design, marked by the conspicuous positioning of the EPD command bus at the Gilbert Shopping Center, plus the employment of a jail van, TSU motorcycles, patrol vehicles, and notably, new Ubco Electric bikes. Traffic units alone performed 25 stops that culminated in seven drivers receiving citations, and managed the scene of a traffic collision. Orchestration between the different department wings underscored an integrated approach to public safety and neighborhood tranquility.

One arrest incident stood out for involving ancillary factors: the apprehended individual, initially cited for possession of an open container, escalated the encounter by attempting a daring escape across the highway and sought refuge within the Corner Market at the intersection of Hwy. 99 and Royal Avenue. The enforcement exercise also yielded an environmental win as 40 cubic yards of refuse were cleared and 20 stolen shopping carts retrieved by the Right of Way team, contributing to a cleaner, safer community space for residents and passersby.
