On a recent Thursday morning, law enforcement in Eugene launched a dedicated operation to clean up local parks, which have become hotspots for illicit activities. A multi-agency task force, including the Eugene Police Street Crimes Unit and other specialized units, descended upon Washington Jefferson Park and its vicinity to tackle drug-related crimes and other illegal behaviors plaguing these public spaces. reports the City of Eugene's official announcement.
The action, starting at 8 a.m. and wrapping up by 2:30 p.m., involved plainclothes officers who initially identified suspects involved in various offenses. This undercover diligence was followed by uniformed officers who stepped in to confront and investigate the individuals in question. Of the 19 people confronted during the sweep, there were arrests and citations handed out for a range of violations.
Breaking down the statistics, seven of the individuals were found to have outstanding warrants, while a total of twelve faced drug charges – ten for possession and two for drug distribution. Additionally, law enforcement uncovered a case of illegal firearm possession, the arrest for which also included a charge for carrying a concealed weapon, specifically brass knuckles. Prostitution investigations led to two arrests. Operatives also enforced park rules, which led to two citations.
