Jacksonville Jaguars fans faced a blend of anticipation and inconvenience this past Saturday as they got their first glimpse inside the partly refurbished EverBank Stadium. The preseason opener not only promised a fresh start for the team but also introduced thousands to the altered dynamics of their game day ritual.
The construction, which began in February, made access to seating areas a new kind of journey. "It made entrancing to the game a little different, but we navigated through it," Willie Cummings Sr. told First Coast News, though he lamented the absence of his usual escalator, a necessity for his 64-year-old legs.
While the Jaguars' administration assures that the seating bowl experience remains untouched, the construction process has incorporated a series of alterations. Chief among them, a new canopy, concourse expansion, and a reconstructed main staircase at Gate 1. Chad Johnson, the chief operating officer of the Jacksonville Jaguars, explained to News4Jax the breadth of the renovations designed to improve the fan experience in the long term.
The flip side to these enhancements, unfortunately, was the post-game experience which saw fans mired in vehicular gridlock, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing construction, which has curtailed parking availability and rerouted traffic patterns. “The traffic was horrible,” Keisha White, a frustrated fan and season ticket holder, shared with Action News Jax. "There’s not as much parking as there was last season," signaling the growing pains often associated with large-scale developments.
Despite the challenges, the Jaguars organization is working diligently to minimize disruptions, ensuring that elevators and the South End Zone escalator remain operational for fans who need them.
