A fire broke out at a combined day care and residential home in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, on Wednesday morning, causing significant damage to the structure. The emergency response team was called to the scene on Wood Street at around 10:54 a.m. after witnesses reported hearing an explosion followed by flames rapidly spreading to engulf the property, as reported by TribLIVE.
Despite the alarming situation, all individuals, including approximately ten children who were at Dornie & Lori's House Day Care located on the premises, were promptly and safely evacuated to a neighboring house across the street.
The building where the fire occurred sustained visible damage, with one side heavily burned, according to WPXI. Thanks to the swift efforts of firefighters, the blaze was contained and prevented from spreading to nearby structures. No injuries have been reported.
A section of Wood Street was subsequently closed off as firefighters and emergency crews worked on securing the area and extinguishing the fire. Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the explosion that preceded the blaze, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
