The National Weather Service in Portland has issued an extreme heat warning for multiple areas, including the Greater Portland/Vancouver Metro, as well as regions along the Columbia River Gorge, and several valleys and foothills, until 11 PM PDT Tuesday. According to the NWS bulletin, residents can expect "dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures of 90-98F," and "overnight low temperatures of 60-70F."
Oregon and South Washington residents are cautioned against the impacts of such high temperatures, which significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those who might be spending substantial time outdoors or lack access to cooling. Moreover, the advisory also touched upon the uncomfortable overnight lows, expected to be most pronounced in urban areas and the Columbia River Gorge.
On top of the scorching heat, an air quality advisory has been issued by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency. High ozone levels, combined with current atmospheric conditions, could result in unhealthy air quality at times through the evening. Pollutants in smoke can cause burning eyes, runny noses, and aggravate heart and lung diseases as well as other serious health problems, the advisory noted earlier today.
Both agencies recommend that outdoor activities should be limited and children should stay indoors to avoid exposure to smoke. They also advise individuals with preexisting heart or lung conditions to adhere strictly to their medical guidance. For those without air conditioning, the use of fans is suggested to aid airflow, and residents should try to keep indoor spaces cool by closing windows during the day and only opening them during cooler evening hours, unless compromised by wildfire smoke. More details and health information are available on the respective websites of the Oregon Air Quality agencies.
In terms of weather, residents can expect a partly sunny day today with highs reaching near 92, while entering the evening, the skies will turn to partly cloudy with a low around 67. Similar patterns of mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions will continue throughout the week, with high temperatures remaining in the mid to upper 80s. Weather updates along with safety tips can be found on the National Weather Service's website.
