The National Weather Service in Portland has issued an extreme heat warning, which remains in effect from Sunday noon until 5 AM PDT Tuesday. Residents of the Greater Portland/Vancouver Metro and other affected regions are bracing for intense temperatures that are expected to reach soaring highs between 97 to 105 degrees. This scorching heat wave, combined with nighttime temperatures lingering in a milder range of 62 to 70 degrees, poses a significant risk for heat-related illnesses.

In an advisory update, the National Weather Service stressed the importance of taking precautions to mitigate the effects of the heat. Advising against leaving children and pets in unattended vehicles was a priority, as the interiors can quickly become deadly. Keeping oneself hydrated, finding shade or cool indoor spaces during the day's peak temperatures, and ensuring the well-being of neighbors and family, especially the elderly, are critical measures during this period.

The areas to be affected, as outlined by the NWS report, include not only the urban centers but also surrounding natural and rural environments, such as the Columbia River Gorge, Hood River Valley, and Oregon Cascades foothills. With the warning in place, local authorities are likely to activate cooling centers and disseminate guidance to help residents cope with the extreme conditions.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in a cool place during the heat of the day, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors," advised the National Weather Service. They also suggest the utilization of fans to keep air circulating indoors for those lacking air conditioning and to manage indoor temperatures by keeping windows shut during daytime and open at night unless the air quality is affected due to wildfire smoke.
