In an early morning blaze in Upper St. Clair, a family's life was saved thanks to the alert barks of their dog. The fire, which started just after 4:30 a.m. at a residence on the 1400 block of Old Meadow Road, prompted firefighters from both Allegheny County and Washington County into action. Heavy smoke and flames were reported coming from the house upon the arrival of the first responders. According to WPXI, two adults, their 1-year-old child, and the family dog all managed to escape the harrowing situation unharmed.
The life-saving canine awoke the occupants, alerting them to the immediate danger. Upper St. Clair Fire Chief Ted Hale highlighted the role of the dog in safeguarding its family, a testament to the often profound bond between humans and their pets. "The dog woke the family up and alerted them to the fire," Hale mentioned, as reported by WPXI. Adding to the complexities of battling the inferno, firefighters were hindered by a non-functional hydrant nearby, forcing them to use an alternative source down the street, which delayed their efforts slightly.
While the bulk of the damage was contained to the left side of the home, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. Efforts to douse the flames resulted in the fire being brought under control within roughly 45 minutes. Crews remained on the scene to manage any potential hot spots, indicating a thorough check to prevent a resurgence of fire.
