Early this morning, a pedestrian accident resulted in the tragic loss of life and the closing of the Gulf Freeway's southbound lanes, creating significant delays and a ripple of disruption through Houston's morning commute. KPRC 2 reported that the incident occurred near Lockwood and Telephone Road on I-45 S, around the ungodly hour of 3 a.m. As investigators worked to piece together the scene, the road became a place of tragedy, briefly halting its usual flow of traffic.
The Houston Police Department was forced to quickly shut down the southbound lanes at Spur 5 to professionally conduct their investigation into the fatal event. Details of the investigation have remained close to the vest, with authorities releasing little information at this stage. According to KHOU, it is presently unclear how many vehicles were involved in hitting the pedestrian or why the individual was on the freeway in the first place.
The impact on traffic was severe, with Houston TranStar confirming a complete shutdown of the southbound main lanes as of 3:32 a.m. The freeway, a lifeline of transportation that bustles ceaselessly both day and night, was rendered still, the flow of cars halted until 8:50 a.m. when lanes finally reopened.
