A fatal shooting occurred yesterday near a bank in Keene, New Hampshire, following a standoff between police and a man, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office. The site of the tense confrontation was at the intersection of West and Ashuelot streets, where the incident concluded with the individual losing their life after an exchange that officials are calling a "prolonged interaction" with law enforcement. NBC Boston reported the event but didn't provide details on the nature of the altercation or who discharged the deadly shot.
During the incident, the Keene Police Department, assisted by the New Hampshire State Police, employed a variety of tactical resources including K-9 units, a drone, and a robot. Photos obtained by WMUR depicted an armed police vehicle and officers with guns aimed at a car in the parking lot of TD Bank.
No officers were harmed during the incident, and officials have indicated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety following the shooting. Residents were, however, asked to steer clear of the area while the situation unfolded. According to a WMUR crew on the scene, what sounded like gunshots were heard around 8 p.m. Shortly after, the area was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.
A witness present in the Dunkin' opposite the bank described the arrival of law enforcement. "Looked through the window and I saw the blue lights from the local police. And right after that happened, a pickup truck pulled in behind with a couple of guys in, like, military gear, helmets on, guns with them pointed at the car," told Richard Lord to WMUR.
The Attorney General's Office is the lead entity looking into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, and per standard procedure, the names of the officers involved are being withheld until formal interviews are conducted. So far, there are scant details about the standoff itself, the man's identity, or what precipitated the grave conclusion of the event. More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
