A man was shot and killed early yesterday morning near one of Sacramento's most beloved family destinations, adding another grim chapter to what residents describe as escalating violence in the historically safe Land Park area.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on the 1400 block of 13th Avenue, which is near the Land Park Playground and baseball fields, according to ABC10. Officers found the man shot inside a vehicle after they were initially called to the scene for a crash.
Investigation Underway
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators are processing the area, talking to witnesses and checking the neighborhood, as reported by ABC10. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will share the person's identity after notifying next of kin.
It is unknown exactly what circumstances led to the shooting or where the shooting took place. The proximity to the playground—a popular spot for families with young children during daylight hours—has left many residents shaken.
Pattern of Violence in Area
This latest incident represents part of a troubling trend affecting the broader Land Park area. Just months earlier, Dayshun Quemani Tylan Walker, 22, was killed in a shooting near Kit Carson and Revere streets in Upper Land Park, according to ABC10.
An arrest was later made in that case, with 19-year-old Chezvon Paige charged in connection to Walker's killing, as detailed by CBS Sacramento. In July, an 8-year-old girl was shot at the same public housing complex where Walker was later killed, according to KCRA.
Broader Crime Concerns
The repeated violence has particularly alarmed community members and local leaders. Crime statistics suggest multiple high-volume shooting events in Sacramento, potentially indicating gang-related activity, per Sirix Monitoring.
Despite the broader crime concerns, areas like Land Park are generally known for their lower crime rates and family-friendly atmosphere, making yesterday's shooting particularly jarring for residents. The Sacramento Police Department continues to investigate and asks anyone with information to contact their dispatch center at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
