This morning, a significant fire broke out on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, causing injuries to three firefighters and a building superintendent. According to ABC7 New York, the fire originated on the roof of an apartment building located at 305 E. 95th St. around 10 a.m. The blaze swiftly extended to the cockloft and engulfed three penthouses on the topmost floor.
Firefighting units were called to respond to reports of a fire that escalated into a 3-alarm blaze, involving over 40 units and 170 personnel, including EMS staff. Videos recorded by bystanders showed bright orange flames and thick black smoke billowing from the roof. The fire’s intensity was felt throughout the neighborhood, with one woman telling CBS News New York, “The entire building shook. I actually thought something, like a truck, drove into the building, or even an earthquake.”
Deputy Assistant Chief James Canty of the New York City Fire Department confirmed that the injuries sustained were minor and stated that the fire originated on the roof. However, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. During the incident, the NYC Office of Emergency Management advised nearby residents to keep their windows closed due to smoke and warned commuters of potential traffic disruptions.
Moreover, reports from CBS News New York highlighted that at the time of the fire, there was a partial stop-work order in effect at the building's location. The specifics concerning this order have not been disclosed.
