An Oregon City former Fred Meyer clerk, Rainbow Melodi Stammet, faced judgment for her theft totaling over $60,000 from the retailer. On Monday, she received a 26-month prison sentence, having pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts of Aggravated Theft in the First Degree and one count of Theft in the First Degree. Clackamas County Circuit Court documents show Stammet, 44, expressed remorse for her actions before Circuit Judge Katherine Weber.
During the sentencing, Stammet was mandated to repay Fred Meyer, a request that aligns with her public contrition. The exact financial detriment that her actions caused wasn't publicly delineated. However, the court deemed the embezzled sum significant enough to warrant over two years behind bars.
The case has brought attention not only to the severe consequences of internal theft but also highlights issues within such retail environments. It often directs the public discourse towards the need for better oversight and stricter internal control measures within companies to prevent such incidents.
