In what has now become a case for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), agents are probing into the events that led to the death of 40-year-old Hawkinsville resident Kyle Thomas Bennett. The GBI stepped in at the request of the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office shortly after the incident occurred on August 10.
Deputies from the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office were summoned to Malcom Nelson Road in the early hours of that Sunday, following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they found Bennett injured from a gunshot wound sustained during what was reported as a fight. Bennett was swiftly transported to a local hospital in Macon, GA, where, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on August 12, a fact reported by the GBI.
The individual who discharged the firearm has claimed self-defense. Despite the ongoing nature of the investigation, and the serious outcome of the event, they have yet to face any charges, as of this report. This raises critical questions about the circumstances surrounding the altercation and the justification of the shooting.
The GBI is actively seeking information from the public, encouraging anyone who may know something about the shooting to reach out. Potential witnesses can contact the GBI's Eastman regional office at 478-374-6988. Alternatively, anonymous tips are welcome and can be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online, or through the See Something, Send Something mobile app. The investigation continues to be a matter of priority, and as new developments unfold, the findings will be handed over to the Oconee Judicial Circuit District Attorney's office for further examination and, any subsequent legal actions.
