An officer-involved shooting in Dunwoody, Georgia is under the microscope after a reported burglary led to gunfire early yesterday morning. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is stepping in to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident that left Fredrick Hammonds, a 35-year-old suspect, injured.
According to the GBI's official statement, Dunwoody police were responding to a burglary at Perimeter Mall around 3:03 a.m. They encountered three individuals fleeing in a stolen vehicle. The suspects, finding themselves trapped in a dead-end, charged their vehicle towards officers, triggering a police response that involved the discharge of weapons. The result was a car chase, a crashed SUV, and Hammonds with a bullet wound being discovered by police in a parking deck near an apartment complex.
The GBI's investigation was requested by the Dunwoody Police Department, marking a standard procedure in cases involving police firearms. The other two suspects who evaded immediate capture are still at large, with law enforcement efforts underway to identify and locate them. The injured Hammonds was taken to a local hospital for treatment, no officers were reported injured during the incident, as detailed by the GBI.
Once the GBI concludes its investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Dekalb County District Attorney's Office for further review. The circumstances leading to the shooting, the use of force by the responding officers, and the actions of the suspects will all be scrutinized as part of a comprehensive analysis.
