A tragic incident on Loop 202 Santan in Gilbert has claimed the life of a man following a multi-vehicle accident that occurred late Sunday night. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, the series of events began with a rollover crash in the eastbound lanes around 11:10 p.m. on Sunday; the driver of the vehicle exited and crossed over to the westbound lanes where he was struck by a white van, "Multiple vehicles subsequently struck the man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene," the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) detailed.
The consequences of the incident led to the closure of both directions of the freeway between Gilbert and Lindsay Roads, which heavily impacted the traffic flow in the area. As revealed by ABC 15, this closure persisted for several hours, with the thoroughfare reopening at approximately 5:30 a.m. The freeway was shut down in both directions between Gilbert and Lindsay Roads; it has since been reopened.
As of yet, the identity of the deceased man has not been made public, and the DPS, along with the Gilbert and Tucson Police Departments and the Arizona Department of Transportation, are conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Motorists experienced significant delays due to the crash and the resulting road closure. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the initial rollover and the subsequent collisions, while DPS continues to investigate the sequence of events leading to the fatality.
