Following a deadly shooting at a Gilbert motel, local authorities have arrested a man who allegedly opened fire in a parking lot, resulting in the death of an adult female. According to the Gilbert Police Department (GPD), the incident transpired yesterday at the establishment located at 2350 W Obispo Avenue.
Reports came in just before 6:00 PM of gunshots being heard. Police who arrived at the scene found the woman with gunshot wounds. Despite 'life-saving measures, the woman was transported to the hospital, where she later died, the GPD statement highlighted. The suspect had taken refuge in his motel room, creating a temporary barricade before surrendering to police after approximately half an hour of negotiations.
The GPD shared that the man and the victim, alongside her husband, were all residing at the motel at the time of the incident. The attack apparently took place as the husband and wife pair were returning to their residence, whereupon the suspect emerged from his accommodations and initiated the gunfire.
The department's Special Assignment Unit was on the scene swiftly, setting up a line of communication with the man and ultimately convincing him to leave his room willingly. He was detained 'without incident,' according to an official announcement. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with further details pending. Gilbert Police extended their 'condolences to the victim's family during this difficult time' and assured that more updates would be forthcoming. They also reiterated that those charged with crimes are considered innocent until proven otherwise, whether through a guilty plea or a court verdict.
