Gilbert residents have a unique opportunity to get a closer look, as applications are now open for the Fall 2025 Citizens' Academy. According to a recent announcement on the Town of Gilbert's official website, this 13-week program is designed to provide civilians with a behind-the-scenes understanding of the Gilbert Police Department's efforts to maintain safety in their community.
Scheduled every Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM starting September 3, the academy classes will unfold at the amphitheater of the Gilbert Police Department located at 75 East Civic Center Drive. Offering an eye on a range of law enforcement topics, the program promises K-9 demonstrations in unit tactics and an insight into SWAT operations, patrolling, and criminal investigations. Participants keen to learn about the force's responses to drugs and gangs, as well as how traffic and DUI laws are enforced, will find the program both informative and engaging, as reported by the Town of Gilbert.
The Citizens' Academy also includes sessions on firearms safety and orientation, dispatch operations, not to forget, an exciting new addition on tactical driving. Graduation from the program comes with not only a certificate but an invitation to join the Citizens' Police Academy Alumni Association, as reported on the Town of Gilbert's news release. A group photo of the proud academy graduates will commemorate this achievement.
Eligibility for the Citizens' Academy requires applicants to be at least 18 years old at the time of application, have a connection to the Town of Gilbert through residence, work, or school attendance, and they must also pass a background check conducted by the GPD, clean of any felony arrests and with no misdemeanor arrests within the past five years. Interested candidates should note that registration closes on August 13, a prompt given to "click here to apply".
In addition to the adult program, the Gilbert Police Department is preparing to host a new Teen Citizens' Academy later this year, furthering their initiative to educate younger community members. For teenagers seeking information on current resources, the department points them to their website at gilbertaz.gov/teens, as per the Town of Gilbert.
