Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, in a show of support for both environmental initiatives and regional economic revitalization, has presided over the inception of two prominent projects in Portsmouth aimed at augmenting the scenic allure and ecological health of the Ohio River area. According to an announcement made yesterday, as reported by the Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's office, these projects are spearheaded by a $34.2 million grant from the Appalachian Community Grant Program and an innovative barge dedicated to the river's beautification.

The grand vision for Portsmouth Riverfront Park, bolstered by the Wonderful Waterfront Initiative, encompasses an enhanced Alexandra Point Park complete with a new overlook to take in the sprawling waters, an amphitheater meant for public gatherings and expressions of community solidarity such as concerts and festivals, a network of riverwalk trails, the addition of an RV campground, and revamped access points to the river shore—all rich with the potential to bolster tourism and spawn a myriad of recreational opportunities, "Through the Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative, we are not just revitalizing our riverfronts, we are reconnecting communities to their natural heritage, sparking new economic opportunities, and creating spaces that everyone can enjoy," Mike DeWine observed in a statement obtained by the Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's office.

Alongside these undertakings, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) shared details on a notable contribution to the H2Ohio initiative: a custom-built "beautification barge", the "Queen of Clean", equipped with a hydraulic crane designed with a focus on the removal of large debris and trash from the river and its banks—a proactive and community-backed approach to preserving the aquatic terrain. "This is an innovative project that involves community support, which is what we like to see in our H2Ohio projects," said Governor DeWine in a communique.

Reflecting a collaborative effort, the barge is a manifestation of the partnership between the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District and county commissioners from Lawrence and Scioto, showcasing an alignment of local government interests with environmental stewardship and with further backing from the H2Ohio Rivers program, indicating a long-term commitment to the vitality of the Ohio River that should persist in the years, Governor DeWine champions the boat for its pivotal role in keeping Ohio's waterways pristine for posterity "This boat will be able to assist in large-scale clean-up projects for years to come. Keeping the Ohio River clean and clear of litter is critical for preserving our natural resources for future generations," he told the Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's office.
