The Governor was joined by an assembly of local leaders to mark this new chapter of development, which finds its roots in a significant state grant aimed at bolstering local infrastructure and community spaces.
The downtown of McConnelsville is set to see substantial changes, including an overhaul of its streetscape. New lighting, sidewalks are to take shape, and the introduction of a roundabout is expected to significantly improve a formerly dangerous six-stop intersection. Barely a stone's throw away, a revitalized riverfront park will soon emerge by the Muskingum River, providing locals and visitors alike with a performance area, gazebo, pavilion, walking trails, and direct access to the water for boats and kayaks. According to the Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's Office, these initiatives are part of DeWine's Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative.
Meanwhile, the historic Twin City Opera House, an establishment dating back to 1892, will see an influx of $3 million from the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization program to fund its facelift. The improvements planned include new accessible restrooms, an elevator, and prime first-floor retail space. These enhancements are in line with the community's intent to preserve the historical charm of the venue while simultaneously adapting it for modern usage.
DeWine expressed optimism about the investment's impact, as he was quoted as saying, "I'm truly happy that the state is helping to reshape how people experience McConnelsville." With monumental contributions like the Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative, the course seems set for a transformed McConnelsville that beckons to be explored and appreciated anew. This initiative is just one part of a larger effort, the Appalachian Community Grant Program, which is poised to inject a total of $500 million into the region's economy, as declared by the Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's Office.
The allocation of funds for these projects isn't happenstance but the end product of a concerted effort by the DeWine Administration, supported by the Ohio General Assembly since 2022, to lift up Ohio's Appalachian counties.
