North Carolina is reinforcing its position as a hub for the biotechnology industry, as Governor Josh Stein joined Thermo Fisher Scientific executives and local dignitaries in celebrating the opening of a new facility in Mebane. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Stein emphasized the significance of the expansion, which adds to the state's burgeoning life sciences sector.

According to a statement obtained by the Office of the Governor of North Carolina, "Thermo Fisher Scientific’s new facility strengthens North Carolina’s leadership in the biotech sector and strengthens our domestic supply chain," said Governor Stein. The new Mebane location is set against the backdrop of a statewide life sciences sector that employs over 225,000 individuals and generates a hefty $88.3 billion annually in economic activity.

The site aims to become instrumental in producing laboratory pipette tips required for diagnostic testing and scientific research. Poised to create over 100 new jobs, the establishment of this facility has been enabled by a sizeable government investment, including $192.5 million from the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Readying to contribute to the local economy, Governor Stein, since his January inauguration, has announced upward of $19 billion in fresh investments, alongside the forecast of more than 25,000 new jobs swelling North Carolina's workforce, according to the Office of the Governor of North Carolina's announcement.
