California Governor Gavin Newsom is on a mission to shine a light on the Trump Administration’s use of federal agents during a redistricting event in Los Angeles. Newsom's office is actioning a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to uncover the reasons behind the deployment, which seemed aimed at political intimidation. This move is a continuation of Newsom's stance against what he perceives as Trump's deployment of federal enforcement for personal gain.
In his latest gambit to expose the Trump Administration's questionable tactics, Newsom described the use of the military and federal law enforcement as a "pathetic and cowardly behavior." This stark characterization comes after dozens of agents appeared at a Democracy Center event last Thursday, as detailed by official communications from the Governor's office. The event spotlighted California's pushback against alleged electoral meddling, but was instead overshadowed by the show of force.
The nature of these actions by President Trump has not gone unnoticed. Governor Newsom suggests that Trump is employing tactics reminiscent of autocrats, using federal agencies to suppress political opposition. "Trump's use of the military and federal law enforcement to try to intimidate his political opponents is yet another dangerous step towards authoritarianism," Newsom stated, as per the Governor's office.
The FOIA request by Governor Newsom's office also seeks clarity on the administration’s collaboration with Fox News, asking specifically about the presence of a reporter and camera crew embedded with the ICE agents. This is not the first instance of Governor Newsom challenging the administration. On August 6, his office requested documents about the activation and deployment costs of military personnel since June 7, which have reportedly amounted to $134 million in expenses, as testified by Department of Defense staff.
