The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office recently disclosed the identity of a man who tragically lost his life to the waters of the Clackamas River. Last Sunday, 32-year-old Germain Merilan of Gresham was recovered from near Carver Park after an incident that was initially reported by his wife. The medical examiner's confirmation came as a sobering final note to the frantic rescue efforts that took place earlier that day.
According to the Sheriff's office, a marine rescue call dispatched responders to 14888 S Springwater Avenue, where a distressing scene unfolded shortly after 6:45 p.m. The victim's wife, in a state of alarm, reported that her husband had submerged beneath the river's currents and had not re-emerged for a worrying span of 30 minutes. With quick coordination, the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium, including Clackamas Fire and American Medical Response, arrived in the vicinity to commence the search.
The recovery of Merilan's body occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m., finalizing a rescue operation that turned into a recovery. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the rapid response and collaborative efforts of the involved agencies, yet the outcome served as a somber reminder of the river's potential perils. Case number 25-015785 now stands closed, with the incident ruled as an accidental death due to drowning.
