The Hanapēpē Road Resurfacing Project, set to smooth out the commute for locals and visitors alike, marked its inception with a traditional blessing yesterday—a nod to the island's cultural practices before the commencement of any major work. According to a statement obtained by Kaua'i County, the Department of Public Works along with Hi’ilawe Construction, LLC, aims to commence operations on September 17, disrupting the weekday flow between 7:30 am and 3:30 pm, holidays and weather permitting.
This endeavor, commanding a budget of $3.9 million, is not merely a superficial makeover: beyond the road resurfacing spanning the entirety of Hanapēpē Road it brings pedestrian pathways on the ground level, a boon for foot travelers from east of Hanapēpē Town all the way to the historic Hanapēpē Bridge, enhanced parking solutions bring increased stalls and the promise of safety at the congested intersections where Hanapēpē Road meets Kaumuali‘i Highway. With the introduction of additional crosswalks, residents and visitors can anticipate a safer transit. Motorists, however, must brace for the sting of closures and detours, as sections of Hanapēpē Road will be intermittently sealed off—the stretches from Kaumualii Highway to Puolo Road, the dance between intersections with Iona Road and Hana Road all the way to Kona Road, and further from Kona Road to the Kaumualii Highway easterly junction will feel the touch of this project.
In the midst of construction, local businesses will continue their operations, sustaining the heartbeat of the community, access will be maintained even though the facades may shift with the evolution of the road and concrete work. The ambitious timeline sketched for this project forecasts a wrap in Fall 2026, but locals are reminded that construction schedules are not set in stone, sensitive as they are to the whims of weather and uncharted disruptions. For those seeking clarity amidst this changing landscape, Erik Rhinelander and Ian Uyesono of Hi’ilawe Construction, LLC., alongside Joel Bautista from the County of Kaua‘i Engineering Division, are the appointed navigators, reachable at 808-369-1800 and 808-241-4883, respectively.
