Two Harris County deputies were injured on Thursday when a suspected drunk driver hit their patrol unit on Beltway 8 at Ella. Constable Mark Herman said the deputies were responding to a pedestrian on the tollway when their vehicle was struck. The driver, identified as 32-year-old Wilfredo Chaves Arzola, was arrested and charged with intoxication assault and reckless aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The deputies involved were a male corporal and a female deputy. The corporal sustained leg, hip, and head injuries, underwent surgery, and was described as having "a long road to recovery," according to Click2Houston. The female deputy was treated at the hospital and released.
Arzola was taken into custody and booked into the Harris County Jail after a crash on Beltway 8 that injured two deputies and a pedestrian. The male corporal is hospitalized in stable condition, while the female deputy has been released and is recovering. Precinct 4 Assistant Chief Toby Hecker said, "There's no excuse for anyone to drive drunk," and mentioned ride-sharing services as alternatives, as reported by KHOU. The tollway reopened later on Thursday morning after several hours of closure.
