The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) of Hawai‘i, in concert with its Contractors License Board, is rolling out a fresh series of public service announcements centered on the "Hire a Licensed Contractor" initiative, this effort targets educating the public on the ins and outs of engaging with licensed professionals for their construction needs, according to details from a recent release from DCCA.
Distributed throughout the state's broadcast TV, streaming platforms, and digital outlets, the campaign lays out clear reasons hiring licensed contractors is essential, these include the verified skills and experience aligning with state standards, the necessity of industry-compliant insurance coverage, exclusive permit access that only licensed contractors hold, and financial protections like the state Contractor’s Recovery Fund that backs disputes with properly licensed workers.
The PSAs have been produced with a local spin, utilizing Hawai‘i-based talents, which includes segments like "It’s Funny Till It’s Not" and "Archie Kalepa’s Story" that feature Lahaina luminary Archie Kalepa—a resonance with the community especially poignant as Maui approaches a solemn anniversary of the August 2023 wildfires and reconstructive efforts push on; these sentiments were echoed in the materials found in the DCCA's initial announcement.
In light of the ongoing restorations, policyholders are being pressed to proceed swiftly with rebuilding, as insurance resolutions concerning personal property loss from the prior wildfires have deadlines that could change based on the insurer some of these deadlines may be tight not truly reflecting the challenges of rebuilding or replacing assets during these times and in response to this the Insurance Commissioner has advocated for flexibility among insurers in their deadlines, thus allowing fire-impacted policyholders a fair chance and the DCCA has partnered with various local agencies and media, including Hawaii News Now, to spotlight best practices when it comes to hiring and verifying the credentials of licensed contractors.
Residents are encouraged to use available resources judiciously, ensuring the contractor hired meets all the necessary qualifications—a step that could prevent costly errors and further delaying an already painstaking process; information can be found on the DCCA website, which includes a series of licensed contractor safety informational graphics and a YouTube playlist, all designed to support homeowners and businesses in making informed decisions during recovery and construction.
