The City of Henderson has officially given the green light for its first charter school, signaling a newfound autonomy in local education oversight. Kesher Academy emerged victorious in a four-way race to earn the city's authorization, with an expected launch in the fall of 2026. The announcement followed a special City Council meeting held on Aug. 5, where the decision was finalized.
In what was described as a strategic move towards enhancing education quality in Henderson, the City Council reviewed applications based on a comprehensive checklist. Applications were gauged on the strength of their enrollment plans, their academic and financial strategies, and their fit with the city's fundamental ideals. According to the City of Henderson’s official statement, unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to refine and resubmit their proposals within a thirty-day timeframe for reconsideration in a future council meeting.
According to the City of Henderson, Mayor Michelle Romero, in her address, commented, "Quality Education is a strategic priority for our City, and we take an active role in supporting Henderson schools, staff and students." She recognized the importance of enhanced municipal governance over educational institutions, signifying this approval as a milestone towards that end. Mayor Romero expressed gratitude to all applicants for their dedication to enhancing educational choices for families in Henderson.
Charter schools operate on public funds but enjoy a degree of independence under a charter agreement with the authorizer—in this case, the City of Henderson. Since the passage of AB400 in the 2023 Legislative Session, Nevada cities and counties have the opportunity to seek authorization status from the State, a status Henderson secured as early as May 2024.
