A 61-year-old man from Henderson has died from injuries sustained in a suspected DUI crash at a Las Vegas bus stop on Monday, nearly three weeks after being hit by a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Roberto Olivas. This brings the number of traffic-related deaths in the Las Vegas area to 104 for the year.
On July 31, at the intersection of Vegas and Buffalo drives, Olivas lost control of his 2018 Ram 1500 pickup truck while driving at high speed. The truck went onto the sidewalk after he tried to pass other vehicles in a right-turn lane, hitting a bus stop shelter where a person was waiting. The crash caused power outages for thousands and significant damage. FOX5 Vegas reported that Olivas "exhibited several signs of impairment" after the accident.
Olivas was arrested and is being held on $200,000 bail at Clark County Detention Center. He faces felony charges for DUI and reckless driving causing substantial bodily harm. Investigators reported his truck was traveling 99 mph five seconds before the crash. He also faces misdemeanor charges for driving without insurance and with an unregistered vehicle. His preliminary hearing is set for September 2, as mentioned by News 3 Las Vegas.
