With the advent of another school year, the Henderson Police Department is stepping up its efforts to promote safety in the realm of electric bikes and scooters. Citing a rise in accidents, the department has initiated a campaign to inform the community on e-bike and e-scooter usage. According to a recent press release, there have been 23 injury crashes involving e-bikes between Jan. 1 and June 10 this year alone. E-bikes were also involved in nearly a third of all bicycle-related traffic incidents.
The newly launched campaign by the Henderson Police involves educating parents and their children through a video that delineates the various classes of these electric conveyances and their associated legalities. It also shares safety tips crucial for the operators of these e-bikes and e-scooters, aiming to mitigate the dangers of reckless behavior. After the investigation of two fatal e-bike crashes since 2024, HPD emphasizes the urgent need for such educational measures. "Keeping our community safe, especially our youth, is a shared responsibility," Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader said in the statement. These resources will soon be made available to schools and local events as part of outreach efforts.
During the school year, Henderson Police Officers are being deployed to ensure the enforcement of school zone regulations and watch over e-bike riders foolishly not following the rules of the road.
