A man in his twenties is in critical condition after a 150-foot fall from the Pali Notches trail in Kailua, as reported yesterday by the Honolulu Fire Department. The hiker was ascending the notoriously treacherous trail when he grabbed onto a rope which, tragically, gave way beneath him. According to KITV, the distress call came in at around 4:35 p.m.
The first responders arrived by foot after the call was made, presumably knowing the gravity of the situation. Nearly 18 personnel across six units were dispatched, as noted by KHON2. A firefighter was subsequently flown to the hiker’s location at approximately 5:13 p.m., provided him with basic life support, and prepared him for airlift to a designated landing zone. Miraculously, no HFD personnel sustained any injuries during the rescue operation.
Once at the landing zone, the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services team took over. They continue to address the hiker's multiple injuries at 5:50 p.m. before transporting him to a local hospital. He remained in critical condition throughout the ordeal, receiving ongoing life support en route, as stated by Hawaii News Now.
