In a recent case that highlights the ongoing efforts against child exploitation, Darian Howard, a 25-year-old from Holland, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Howard pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a child after a police investigation exposed his heinous actions, which included taking sexually explicit photos of two three-year-old girls and a video where he was seen assaulting a minor.
According to a press release by the U.S. Attorney's Office, the case against Howard unfolded after a distraught woman contacted emergency services in November last year, having discovered the abhorrent images of her daughter. The Holland Department of Public Safety, working with federal agencies, managed to build watching over the safety of the community, a case that resulted in the severe punishment for Howard.
U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey stressed the seriousness of the crime and the office’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly young children. He noted that child exploitation is among the most disturbing offenses the office handles.
Captain Kris Haglund of the Holland Department of Public Safety highlighted the importance of local efforts in resolving the case. He credited partnerships with the FBI and the Children’s Advocacy Center for the successful outcome and expressed hope that the families find closure through the prosecution.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Reuben Coleman underscored the FBI’s commitment to combating exploitation and maintaining a firm stance against predators. He praised the collaboration among the WEBCHEX task force, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and local police that led to Howard’s indictment.
The prosecution and sentencing of Howard are part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies working together to identify and prosecute individuals involved in child exploitation. The program also focuses on educating communities about the risks of online child exploitation and teaching children how to protect themselves.
