A tragic single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 2 has resulted in the death of a Homer man, according to Louisiana State Police Troop G. The incident, which took place near Liberty Hill Road, claimed the life of 68-year-old Michael Coleman.
Reporting on the details of the accident, Louisiana State Police indicated that Coleman was driving his 2000 Oldsmobile Alero eastbound when, traveling down an embankment for reasons yet to be determined, his vehicle left the road and struck a tree. Found unrestrained by a seatbelt at the time, Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene.
While impairment is not currently suspected to have played a role in this unfortunate event, routine toxicology samples were taken for analysis to confirm this assessment. The police are continuing their investigation into the specific causes contributing to this fatal crash.
Louisiana law mandates that all passengers in a vehicle, regardless of where they are seated, must wear a seat belt. The Louisiana State Police, lamenting the loss of life, reminded the public that seat belts can "dramatically reduce your chance of being severely injured or killed in a crash." They stressed the importance of this safety measure which, when worn properly, saved lives every day.
