A 73-year-old man remains hospitalized in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the H-1 freeway near Middle Street last night. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on the westbound lanes, according to Honolulu Star-Advertiser, marking another dangerous night on Oahu's busiest freeway.
The pedestrian collision was the second serious crash within 30 minutes last night. Earlier, KHON2 reported another collision near the Nu'uanu overpass involving a sedan and truck that injured a 10-year-old girl. Both incidents required emergency medical response and lane closures during the evening commute.
Deadly Pattern Near Middle Street
The Middle Street area has become increasingly hazardous for traffic. Just one day earlier, a 22-year-old motorcyclist died after losing control and colliding with a guardrail near the Middle Street overpass while traveling westbound at high speed around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday. That fatality marked Oahu's 50th traffic death of the year, as reported by KHON2.
Construction work has been ongoing in the area, with nightly closures affecting traffic patterns. The Hawaii Department of Transportation has scheduled full closures of the westbound H-201 Moanalua Freeway near the Middle Street off-ramp through August 14 for paving operations, potentially creating confusion for drivers navigating detours.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services transported the injured pedestrian to a hospital emergency room with multiple injuries. The man was reportedly hit while attempting to cross the freeway, though circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear. Police have not released additional details about the victim's identity or what prompted him to cross the busy roadway.
