The Harris County Sheriff's Office  is under scrutiny after releasing a disturbing surveillance video depicting an altercation between deputies and an inmate, identified as 32-year-old Alexis Cardenas, which resulted in Cardenas' death. The incident occurred following his 30-hour stay in the Harris County Jail on misdemeanor warrants.

The released footage from the morning of July 8 shows Cardenas being escorted out of the jail, only for him to resist leaving and struggle with officers. According to KPRC 2, one officer also got pulled to the ground during the struggle.

Cardenas managed to enter a secure area where other inmates were, at which point multiple officers pinned him down for approximately eight minutes. The situation took a fatal turn when officers realized he was unresponsive. As reported by KHOU 11, CPR was administered by a detention sergeant, but Cardenas died at the hospital.

Following the release of the video, the family of Cardenas issued a statement disputing the law enforcement narrative, saying, "What I witnessed was murder," Melissa Cardenas told KHOU 11. "Alexis never once threw a punch. He waved his hands in the air, meaning he didn’t want any problems, and he ended up dead." The family condemned the actions of the Harris County Sheriff's Office for what they described as escalation and failure to de-escalate the situation. Furthermore, they alleged that Alexis was having a mental episode, and indicated he might have been seeking help because he was released late at night, contrary to state law and local policy.

The investigation into the incident is now being handled by the Texas Rangers and the HCSO's Internal Affairs Division. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez remarked on the uniqueness of the event, saying he's never seen someone resist while being let out of jail. Meanwhile, the medical examiner is yet to detail the cause of Cardenas' death, and the involved officers have been reassigned to non-inmate-contact roles pending the outcome of the investigation.
