More than a hundred women came together in Houston for the "Power of 7" conference—an inspiring financial literacy event led by Kim Stroud, mother of Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud. Organized by the C.J. Stroud Foundation in collaboration with the Women’s Resource and TDECU, the event aimed to empower women with critical financial tools, from budgeting and credit management to building an online brand. A TDECU representative, speaking to Click2Houston, emphasized the pressing need for such initiatives, noting that in Houston, poverty often disproportionately affects women.
Kim Stroud’s experience highlights the challenges of navigating financial hardship. As a single mother raising two children, she encountered significant economic obstacles that shaped her understanding of money management. Speaking at the “Power of 7” conference, she told the audience, "I didn’t have financial literacy. I had survivalist literacy, and that’s really all I knew — was survival." Her story was included as part of the event’s educational programming, which aimed to help women build stronger financial foundations, in a statement obtained by Click2Houston. Despite periods of financial distress, Stroud emphasized that preparation was essential for improving future outcomes. Her remarks were shared during the event hosted by the C.J. Stroud Foundation.
During the conference, Kim Stroud spoke about emotional and financial resilience, discussing the role of both strength and vulnerability in navigating hardship. She shared a memory of her son, C.J. Stroud, who, despite having little beyond ambition, promised to lift their family out of difficult circumstances. His sense of determination developed as he watched his mother face each day. "You don’t have to tell your children anything—they know," Kim told Essentially Sports. "And it’s not what you’re doing in the situation; it’s how you’re responding to it. That’s what they’re learning."
Kim’s story also gained attention on social media when C.J. Stroud posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, recounting the sacrifices she made during his upbringing. Her experiences of hardship and perseverance served as a backdrop to the event, illustrating the challenges of raising a child with professional aspirations while facing financial instability. Reflecting on her influence as a parent, Kim said, "The hard work and dedication that my son puts in today is because of that storage girl who worked so hard," according to the same interview with Essentially Sports.
