Houston-area law enforcement is increasing safety measures for Labor Day weekend with a multi-agency "No Refusal" initiative from Friday through Monday night to address impaired driving. Last year, DWI-related crashes during the holiday weekend caused 10 deaths and several serious injuries. The Gulf Freeway is a focus due to its history of drunk driving incidents. If suspected drivers refuse breath or blood tests, Fort Bend County's District Attorney's Office can quickly obtain search warrants, with judges and medical staff on standby, according to Click2Houston

Emphasizing prevention, officials encouraged residents to make responsible choices, urging them to designate sober drivers or utilize alternative transportation methods, such as rideshare services. "I always say, if you’re going to drink, don’t drive," Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen told Click2Houston. Complementing these efforts, TxDOT pushes its campaign with a clear message: "Drive Sober. No Regrets."

Harris County officials implemented a no-refusal weekend ahead of July 4 to reduce drunk driving, increasing patrols on roads and waterways. La Porte Police Chief Scott Pullig said, "If you’re going to consume alcoholic beverages, just know that we’re going to have extra enforcement out on the roadways and the waterways this weekend." Krystalle Wright, whose daughter died in a suspected drunk driving accident, works with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and said, "Please be responsible," adding, "Think of the family’s life you may shatter, like ours was shattered that night. That’s not something you can come back from," as reported by KHOU.
