In a sobering development from Howard County, authorities have charged a mother with the heart-wrenching crime of her own child's death. Shalyne Brown, a 27-year-old without a permanent residence, faces charges of second-degree murder and first- and second-degree child abuse following the demise of her 3-year-old in Columbia. According to the Howard County Police Department's press release, the investigation was set off by a distressing call to police on November 1, 2024, regarding a deceased child.
Upon arrival at the scene, responders were confronted with the grim reality of the child's condition: a young body marred by bruises and scars. Following months of rigorous examination, autopsy findings released in March pinned the cause of death on homicide, attributing it specifically to dehydration and malnourishment.
Brown's capture came after months of eluding the authorities, culminating in her recent arrest in Pennsylvania. She has since been extradited to Howard County, where she is now being detained at the Howard County Detention Center.
