
Earlier today, an officer-involved shooting occurred in Charlotte's Independence Division, leaving one person with life-threatening injuries, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported. According to a statement from the CMPD, the incident unfolded just before 2 a.m. along the 800 block of Pineborough Road as officers responded to an Assist MEDIC call.
Upon arrival, officers were confronted with an individual who was behaving erratically and proceeded to fire multiple shots towards them, prompting the officers to shoot back, striking the individual several times, the CMPD release detailed none of the officers were hit in the exchange, a firearm was found at the scene and subsequent to the shooting, officers rendered immediate aid to the wounded subject who was then transported to the hospital in critical condition.
In the aftermath of the shooting, representatives from various local departments, including the Charlotte Fire Department and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office, arrived on site, CMPD shared. The CMPD's Crime Scene Search team was also dispatched to process the scene and collect physical evidence which is part of the procedural response to such incidents.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has taken the lead on this case while the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure, the CMPD's protocol dictates, the officers will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
