A grim discovery was made in the early hours last Saturday, August 23, when an unidentified baby girl was found dead in Cleveland's West Side. The Cleveland Division of Police, along with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office, is investigating the incident that unfolded in the 2200 block of W. 73rd St.
The police were first alerted to the situation at approximately 2:17 a.m. following a call regarding a suspected overdose, as reported by Cleveland19. On arrival at the scene, authorities found a 39-year-old woman being treated by Cleveland EMS for what appeared to be an overdose, she was experiencing an “altered mental status apparently from an unknown substance."
The situation took a dramatic turn when officers were informed that the woman had recently given birth. A subsequent search led to the heart-wrenching discovery of an infant inside a cloth shopping bag on a driveway. According to WKYC, Cleveland Division of Police Sergeant Wilfredo Diaz stated, "During their investigation, officers learned the woman had recently given birth and that the baby might be nearby. Officers immediately searched the area and discovered an infant inside a cloth shopping bag in a driveway."
The infant was pronounced dead at the scene, and while the mother was transported to a local hospital for further treatment, the identity of both remains was withheld. Although the official cause of death is pending, the medical examiner's preliminary findings suggest the death was a suspected homicide, FOX8 reports. More details are expected to emerge as authorities continue their investigation into this tragic event.
