An inmate at Union County Detention Center has passed away while under medical care, as reported by the local sheriff's office. The incident, occurring earlier yesterday, involved 61-year-old Gregory Faircloth, who reportedly became unresponsive during a medical examination. According to WBTV, despite immediate life-saving efforts by the medical team, Faircloth was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

Held on custody since August 12, Faircloth was being held in the medical unit due to various pre-existing health conditions. As relayed by QC News, the Union County Sheriff's Office noted no foul play is suspected in the inmate's death. Carrying several pre-existing conditions, Faircloth was being monitored in the detention center's medical wing.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) has been appointed to conduct an independent investigation as per standard procedure. "Sheriff Cathey and the Union County Sheriff’s Office extend their condolences to Mr. Faircloth’s family and recognize the professional response of the detention and medical personnel involved," UCSO wrote, as QC News quotes.

The sheriff, having sought the NCSBI's review of the case, strives for a thorough understanding of the circumstances leading to Faircloth's death, according to WCNC.
