A series of events culminated in an in-custody death at Brooklyn Criminal Court yesterday, as reported by the NYPD. A man, 46, suffered what was described as a medical episode within the depths of a holding cell at the Kings County Criminal Court and was pronounced dead subsequent to its discovery.
According to ABC7NY, the unnamed man was found unresponsive after 10 p.m., with pronounced death at the scene. While the nature of the medical episode remains undisclosed, the chief medical examiner has taken up the mantle of investigation into the precise cause of death.
This was the second in-custody death reported this year at the Schermerhorn Street facility, which has previously experienced similar incidents. In March, 32-year-old Soso Ramishvili died following a medical episode. As per report by AMNY, sources familiar with the most recent case said the man had been arrested for petty theft after allegedly stealing seafood from a Whole Foods Market and had more than 90 prior arrests.
